If these reports have any truth in them, then I personally think it would be a bad move. Firstly, there’s the question of accessibility. I know of many elderly people who have grown up with newspapers, and buy them every single day, to see what’s happening in the world. Not only that, but the traditional newspaper brings together so many articles and so much variety into one publication. Does this happen on a website? No.

Secondly, there’s the Guardian’s mobile apps. I’ve tried to get on with the iPad app, I really have, but I just don’t like it. I’d much prefer to pay 20p and read through the Independent’s condensed ‘i’ Newspaper, something which brings ideas from digital and applies them to print. So before they give up on print altogether, I think the Guardian must really think about their app’s interface. It is, after all, in its first incarnation.

Digital is still in its early stages. There are still plenty of awful mobile apps around, mainly because the mobile app revolution is still happening - the app store only arrived four years ago, let’s not forget. The Guardian, in my eyes, with such a large readership of people from the older generations, would be daft to ditch print and completely rely on digital, let alone for it to happen so soon.

Hi everyone.
I particularly liked Laura Stanworth’s work, which included the ‘Graphic Design Olympics’ board game. Nick Yates‘ work also impressed me, with the ‘Celebrity Matches’ packaging and Emergency Headwear poster. It made a change to see some really playful design which has the potential to bring what we do into a wider domain - games, popular culture etc. I also really liked Jan Agulto’s alternative design for the Metro newspaper - something I found refreshingly different.

I’ve included links to the work - in all honesty I thought the entire exhibition was great, and I’m already raring to go for my third and final year studying Graphic Design!

Other work from the show can be seen here. It runs until tomorrow - 20th June, at Quay House in Manchester.

I was approached by the University of Chester’s Christian Union to create the invitations for the end of year formal. Seeing as it was a Summer event, I wanted to capture the spirit of this well loved season, going for a vintage floral theme, and something I felt to be in keeping with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee happening on the same weekend.

This is an App designed for my most recent...

The Hub #2 - App

This is an App designed for my most recent research methods brief - engaging young people with reading. I identified libraries as a key issue amongst young people that needs addressing - they just aren’t into going to their local libraries - and they could close down if people don’t visit.

With this in mind, I used my local library as a model to undertake a full rebrand, with a new initiative to engage people with reading again. A new name (The Hub) was devised to really place this at the centre of the community, offering an open plan social space adjoining the main library, where people can catch up over a coffee or a smoothie, talk about anything, browse the collections and chill out.

Regular events such as Scrabble Championships (based around the highly popular iPad game) and Angry Birds Showdown bring in young people, as well as late opening hours and other events such as book signings and gigs for unsigned bands.

The app is designed to reflect The Hub’s dynamic interior, available freely through the app store so that everyone can download and easily see what’s happening at The Hub. They can check the leader boards, share special offers with their friends (like 2 for 1 on drinks/lunch), and browse videos of recent events.

I had immense fun working on this brief - there’s more to it, but I’m afraid I can’t reveal everything just yet. I’ve been really passionate to rework the library, and I’m hopeful that in the future, things like this will engage everyone with reading once again.

I was approached by KingsWay Community Café to produce some informational leaflets & posters for use in the café, as well as the partnering St Michael’s Church and Kingsway Chapel.

The aim was to show visitors what KingsWay is about, as well as giving an insight into those partnering churches. I included QR codes, meaning that visitors with smartphones (a large portion of KingsWay’s potential customers are students at the nearby university) could check out the websites without having to go home and remember the addresses.

The colours were chosen to reflect the café’s colour scheme and friendly atmosphere.

My latest university brief saw my first ‘proper’ venture into web design, designing a brand new website to sit alongside my library rebrand, which you’ll hear about next month. The theme is decidedly ‘vintage’ to fit alongside The Hub itself, a new project which is designed to encourage young people to read.

More on this brief to come!

Swing Into Spring

I was approached by On the Beat Music to design the programme for their ‘Swing Into Spring’ concert with St Andrew’s Primary School. A simple black & white design was needed, so I applied a slightly 1940s vibe to capture the spirit of this musical evening.

The programmes were produced to A5 size.

Mission Week #2

Here are another two designs I created for the CU’s mission week. The car wash flyer was given a slightly vintage, friendly theme to encourage people to the event, whilst the ‘International Dessert Evening’ flyer is a vintage/contemporary hybrid, highlighting the colours in the dessert pictured.
